10/23 Thread (BC):
Crossroads Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. I have been with the organization almost 6 years and have accomplished achievement of my MSL (Masters Strategic Leadership) and LOVE the organization…BUT…I am not having any success in moving into a new position…my interviews are great experiences but it seems to be a pattern of not being selected yet encouraged to continue applying…received information from a mentor/manager to ask for candid feedback…when is enough…ENOUGH??

Are you suggesting that you are the only one in your entire department who does good work and that all must be run by you?
You’re welcome 😇
Coming from a fellow agency person who went in-house: if it’s a recent position, lay low. Help push the needle, but do it slowly. Do it respectfully. They don’t know what they don’t know. Build trust, be a good team member, show those leadership skills that prompt them to want to work collaboratively with you and see where it goes. Think marathon, not a sprint.
C1 - Again, good advice. It’s hard not to say much. As designers and writers we are trained to make things perfect. The next hurdle is to get them to want me to change the work - or ask for advice. That only comes with trust first. Thank you!
I get where you're coming from. When you go from agency to in-house, the quality of brand management typically tanks. It can be really hard to deal with. In my experience, it really depends on the company culture if you can even make a dent with it. Some people simply don't get or don't care. I know that's not a great answer. I would probably keep my head down and make little suggestions/recommendations carefully, build trust, and move the needle slowly.
No AM1 - It is a great answer. Everyone cares. Everyone is trying with the skills they have. I can see what’s probably going wrong because I have different eyes. Hope that doesn’t sound boastful again. But, because there are so many cooks, it’s hard to wrangle everyone in the same direction. I have to be careful not to offend, or come off cocky, and, technically, it’s not my job, but there’s part of me that wants it to be. All hail the ad agency person!!!! (Well, not really) 😂
I’d start by telling everyone that they are morons and that I am god’s gift to advertising.
Next team meeting. for sure!
They should come to see the difference in your work versus what else is being produced. That should, hopefully come naturally. Maybe after your a bit more settled you can suggest that?…my opinion.
C2 -That s my basic premise for any work situation. I ask in a similar way, “I wonder if this might suggest…” or, what if we were to…? Because everyone has their own idea of what should be done. But the way you phrase things is right on the money. Good reminders from all. Thank you!
That was kind of an eye opener for me too. Most of the folks who climb the ladder brand side don’t do it with strong conceptual thinking. They do it by working super efficiently and keeping clients happy. All I can say is keep presenting work you’re proud of.
CD1 -Appreciate that. thx
You took a job that’s not at an agency, what did you expect? It’s more rare than common that in-house talent can compete with agency talent. I’d check your status and thought toward overpowering a department.
Glint- Different skills than mine. Not one designer vs. another type of thing.
