I submitted a Leave of Absence from my doctor to my job 2 weeks ago as a result of feeling extremely overwhelmed & stressed since my Supervisor had been off for almost 4 weeks. While she was off, ALL of her work fell back on me & I was expected to reach out to all of her clients in addition to mine with 2 programs running at the same time. Plus I was suffering from migraines.Surprisingly, my Director wanted to know what has been creating a stress level for me that I am having migraines.

I might be wrong but instead of offering you genuine help they are overwhelming you all the more.

All of what you have suggested they are asking is just a way of retaliation and make you suffer more. They are trying to dig in points to turn them against you. My suggestion would be to try and get out of that project/company and start planning a backup for your jobs. Switch if you can, and till then call in sick if things become overbearing

I agree with you 1,000%. The first time I told my supervisor I was feeling overwhelmed, she suggested for me to give her a list of the day to day responsibilities I did for a day that could be making me feel overwhelmed.

My doctor indicated that "due to the significant amount of stress related to my job, I am experiencing adverse effects on my physical and mental health." Therefore, they are trying to get to the bottom of what is causing me to feel overwhelmed instead of recognizing the fact that my Supervisor has been taking off several times which has created am increase in the workload, which has made me feel overwhelmed.

How would you respond to that message?

For the love of all things, use this time to look for a new job because these posts are ridiculous. I felt bad the first couple of posts but you are part of the problem and you just need to not work there. It is exceptionally clear that you are not at a place where you will succeed.

as a result of feeling extremely overwhelmed & stressed since my Supervisor had been off for almost 4 weeks. While she was off, ALL of her work fell back on me and I was expected to reach out to all of her clients in addition to mine with 2 programs running at the samd time. Plus I was suffering from migraines. Surprisingly, my Director wanted to know what has been creating a stress level for me that I am having migraines & feel like i need to take a break from the job? Is it specifically related to your supervisor being gone for a couple of weeks? I suggested for them to see if we can have a volunteer available in the case that an emergency happens again that is similar to this. She wants to find out specifically what is causing the stress? Do you feel like there isnt enough hours in the day to get things done? Is it the nature of the work? What is happening because I know that based on my experience ,yes there is alot of extra work that we did while your supervisor was out, but I was able to manage it. I would like to understand what brings it to a point where its unmanageable. Because based on what she's seen, there was no indication to her that i was struggling. I said "I was just trying to keep holding on and being empathetic because I know my supervisor was dealing with alot." Were you having migraines before went on leave? I said "my doctor recommended for me to take some time off to focus on my mental well being health." I really want to get clear on is there something specific about the workload or the job? What is that workload and have done everything we can to support you? She provided a suggested schedule of how to manage your time. She said she was feeling a little frustrated that this couldnt be addressed sooner so that I wouldnt feel like I had to take a couple of weeks off. (As if Im not supposed to be able to take some time off). Im just trying to understand why there wasnt more input fron you earlier to say I was struggling or on having having issues. Im a little concerned that you didnt or felt that you couldnt and just felt like u kept going and going instead of reaching out. Its really important that we create a culture where we can discuss these things...smh so ridiculous. I was asked to submit a list of my day to day duties and indicate how long I normally spend on each task. My Manager responded to me today and said, "Thanks so much for submitting this document before you left, but this doesn't really tell us anything about what might be making you feel overwhelmed or how much time you are spending on each task. The supervisor and I reviewed it and based on this schedule, we don't see anything that would indicate that you have more work than you can handle. I am curious why it's taking 2 hours to return calls, voicemails, and emails. Having a sense of how many calls, emails, and voicemails you are dealing with daily would help. I think I could have been more clear about what I meant by "tracking your time." This is something that is commonly done in the nonprofit sector - it's usually done to determine how much staff time each grant or project demands, but in this case it would be to help us see which tasks are taking a long time or are making you feel overwhelmed. The idea is to track what you do every 15-30 minutes so you can find out how long things ACTUALLY take to complete. For example, some emails are quick (5 min), but others that require more detail may take longer to compose (15 min). I think this would be especially helpful for tracking the time you spend on phone calls with clients. I think that tracking 2-3 days of work would be enough to establish where your time is being spent and then we can determine what's sucking up your time and/or causing the stress and overwhelm. Please track the time throughout the day after each task is completed, rather than waiting until the end of the day to piece it together. The more detail you can provide, the better. For example, "9 am - Returned voicemail to XXX student answering questions about the program. Call lasted 10 minutes. 9:10 am - checked email and responded to 1 email from a housing referral client - 20 minutes" tells us a lot more than "Responded to emails and voicemails." I have attached a Google sheet template that you can use to track your time. There is also a second tab where I created a sample based on how I spent my workday on Monday. I did do it at the end of the day, so it's not as detailed as I would like it to be. When you return, please track 3 days of work during a typical week. Then we can all review the results and discuss which tasks are taking more time than necessary and which are causing you stress. How would you respond to an email like this? ABSOLUTE CRAZINESS. I Know.

OP I would definitely recommend looking for a new job. I have read several of your posts and it seems like this job is really taking a toll on your mental and physical health. If you have to take a LOA then I would say it is definitely time to start looking for something new.

I ALMOST wrote my resignation letter & submitted it and talked it over with my mom and she had that worried sound in her voice and said "im just concerned about the financial aspect of it if you leave." And here I am--while still waiting for these sorry ass businesses to contact me back. Everyone has a bunch of excuses about not hiring ppl right now due to the holidays. Bullshit. Its like that ALL YEAR ROUND.

The leave of absence happened as a result of my supervisor constantly taking off for a whole month and expecting for me to do her work the entire time she was off. It was just out of control.

Just wanted to know do they really keeps stuff confidential or can they inform my Manager regarding the personal conversations.

I let the shame spiral get the better of me this week. Realized that I wasn’t going to be able to meet a deadline because I’d mismanaged my time and the project was more complex than I though. Rather than admit the mistake and suggest a new deadline, I just kept saying I’d send it tomorrow/later/so on. And then I stayed up basically three days straight working, which has only made me slower and more inefficient. So I’m still not done and now I’m in the pits of anxiety and exhaustion hell. FML.

We recently got the ok to schedule our orientation and delivery date for our IVF medications and all I have to say is ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF! My husband has dermatomyositis, and his doctor put off treatment so that we could do some collection and go through IVF. I felt like my dr was blowing off our timeline, but I persisted. I worked with CVS Caremark directly and got approval in 2 days (not the expected 3 weeks). Moral of the story: ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF!
