Not that I would ever say this to leadership, but one of my colleagues had a friend email his firm asking for a raise and after appreciating their positive comments and feedback, etc. stated "Unfortunately, I can't pay my bills with pats on the back." 🤣
It's sad but true. I've been in your position and am still somewhat there so I don't have any words of wisdom because what I've tried hasn't worked. If you find the secret to getting that raise, please share! Wishing you the very best!
Have your ducks in a row and send an email. If a job isn't paying you your worth then walk away.
I would ask for additional PTO in lieu of an increase or an increase if you meet x amount of billables per quarter
I just left a firm with approximately 24 attorneys and staff totaling 50. I was there 4.5 years and never got a raise. They "don't give raises" is what I heard over and over. They do give a bonus in November but it fluctuates so some years I actually made less.
Respect does not pay the mortgage, however, I left a job of 17 years because no raise in 5 years and struggling ever since with 3 layoffs. It is tough, but if you have respect and job security keep it in this profession with no humanity left...
You are not going to get a raise. If you are getting great feedback, I would job search and get the increase in your job jump. You have to negotiate it going in - what they are expecting. Do not name a number first; do not say what you earned. If they push it - give a range with the low end what you want.
