Law schools should consider banning DLA from their OCI programs. They wield significant influence, and their decisions will have lasting effects well beyond the remaining years of the current administration.

This. Law schools can react. They can show they won't put up this racism and nonsense from firms.

A10: It’s not a deciding factor but it is a pretty clear indicator of intent!

like

You realize it's the opposite, right? The schools need the law firms. There is an abundance of interchangeable, untrained lawyers, and OCI isn't something special that firms need.

Note the usual caveats that this does not mean I support Trump, what Paul Weiss did, etc. Just providing a dose of reality.

I don’t understand why people don’t think every other big law firm will follow. Exactly as they did with the DEI language on the website. Naive to think otherwise

likesmart

I mean ok but it’s completely naive to be certain your firm (and others) won’t reverse course here

Which other firms should be banned from OCI?

A9 it’s unfair that this is an overwhelmingly majority white-male profession in the first place. In a “fair” world that would not be the case and we all know it. Change that premise and I’m all for these groups and related benefits going away. (And now we’ve gone full circle as to why DEI efforts are not only beneficial, but owed.)

What's OCI?

On campus interviews.

Who is getting a job these days from OCI anyway? My firm mostly fills its class pre-OCI.

like

Agreed, firms are all moving away from OCI. That’s not a particularly effective threat.

Conventional wisdom on current firm counter-offering when mentioning you have a few offers? I have an offer at a large firm in Miami. Current large firm has no office there but mentioned they can likely let me be there in a remote basis. BCG and a few other law blog sites have advised against accepting current firm counter-offers, e.g., likely to leave, not loyal, off partner track, etc., but would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

I do miss seeing my colleagues sometimes but being able to actually use random breaks in the day that you get in transactional, especially as a junior, productively (work out, cook a meal, fold laundry) has made this job so much easier and sustainable for me. It’s still exhausting and so unpredictable and the December crush is killing me but I don’t know how anyone did this for more than a year or two pre-Covid when people spent all day and evening in the office.

Incoming transactional attorney. Will be licensed (hopefully—July bar taker) in a non-UBE state. My firm has offices in almost every major city.

Do I need to wait 5 years before being able to waive into states to become licensed there, in case I want to leave my current state? How does that work?

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.
