Transactional associates: do you bill your time while you are up late at night waiting for either: 1) opposing counsel doc reverts; or 2) when someone senior on your team asks to do something, but you are waiting for them to finish so you can do that something?

If (1) it’s something that needs to be done that night and (2) there is no other matter I can work on to get ahead and bill to, yes

like

100% yes

like

Attend to x matter.

like

On 2 yes. On 1 If I’m told to stay up and wait then yes. If I can do it the next day if I want then no.

like

No. But because I am never just waiting for a document. I usually working on something else or relaxing.

like

As a litigation associate, am I missing something here? We don’t bill our time when we wait for someone else to turn revisions to motions/briefs etc, even if we are staying up all night for it and not working on other matters. Why is it that transactional associates are allowed to bill while not actively doing something? (Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not mad, just very very jealous)

like

When it’s after my bed time, if I have to stay up solely for the client, hell yes they are paying for that time. I once had a client provide something at 2:30am that had to be processed before morning. There should be a difference between my time from 10am-10:30am and 1am-1:30am.

like

First one always (if I’m not working on anything else or if it prevents me from doing what I would’ve otherwise been doing - ie sleeping). Second one not as much - if it’s a partner then maybe but usually I just watch tv or cook or clean while I’m waiting

like

What if you’d rather be sleeping in situation #2? Haha

Yes

Yes if the client requested to wait and turn around quickly or file or the opposing counsel is being difficult. No if just waiting for my own partner to sign off on my ramblings lol

If you’re a new transactional third year, and you didn’t catch a mistake that the partner did, but the mid-level, partner and opposite side did not catch it as well, is it still ultimately your fault?

Client: Is this legal?
Me: No, there is specific precedent on point.
Client: Okay, well we need you guys to work twice as hard to make it legal somehow.
Me: Okay, well we wrote a memorandum about certain changes you could make to your business model that we believe...
Client: No. The business model is what it is.
Partner: Message received. We will work twice as hard.
Me: [starts looking for lateral opportunities]

Hey all - first year associate here… I’ve met my hours requirement for this year (requirement is 1900 and am currently at around 2050 with billable hours - approx. 2160 with non billable admin hours) and I am just tired. Is it okay to just “disappear” during the holidays (thanksgiving week, week of Christmas) and let partners and senior associates know I am not available? At this point I don’t care about making more money - I just want to sleep, read a good trashy book, and cuddle with my dog.

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

Anyone else makes sure to bill when going to the bathroom?

Watching Partner Track Haha are tax people like this at every firm?

How do you handle micro managers? I’m a second year transactional associate and for the most part the partners and senior associates I work for trust me to get the work done. But this one guy is constantly checking up on me, asking for status of deliverables long before the deadlines he gave me, and just generally pestering me on everything I do. I am going to go insane if don’t figure out a way to stop this.
