Doesn’t he know that you have to be off to heal after surgery? I’d get a doctors note . They won’t argue w it. At least in my district everything changes when you present a doctor note or FMLA paperwork. Good luck
Not sure about the auto decline 😬
Get a doctor’s note and sent it as an attachment with a short email reiterating the consent. Keep it very short and to the point. Don’t explain. Don’t elaborate. Don’t ask.
Just say, “as previously communicated, I’d be out on leave of absence due to healthcare emergency. Please see for the attached medical decision.”
Line up coverage and tell him that person will handle it because… you know… surgery and pain meds
Take your medical leave and some vacation time if needed - your health and recovery should be your top priority - this is a BS move they are taking - invest in Ai agents and external support staff to do your work while you recover - avoivd being laid off an send your boss a Christmas gift
You can still work on the project until you are off
They might have forgotten or just not realized it. I'd send a polite reminder that you'll be on medical leave, happy to transition, and leave it at that. At the same time, like others have mentioned, work with HR to get FMLA and disability paperwork completed. This might take some time depending on your doctor. HR should take care of any future communication with your team if your manager has an issue with your leave.
Are you taking official medical leave like STD or FMLA? If so there are laws and regulations surrounding that. When I had surgery I took "vacation" not medical so I didn't have the same protection or ability to decline work related tasks.
