Hard skills are what get you hired. Soft skills are what get you promoted.
You can work hard and be smart and also advocate for yourself. It’s not mutually exclusive. And I’ve found that people who are good at self promotion but don’t have the chops to back it up (ie are not hard working or smart) are found out eventually. Extensive job hopping usually suggests this.
If you work hard and are smart, make sure people know it and don’t just assume they’re noticing. Most people aren’t because they’re too busy thinking about themselves.
Extensive job hopping does not suggest that.
*signs you have disconnected and shitty leadership*
100% agreed. Direct from a hard worker who just put in her notice, now the slacker will have plenty to do..🤣
Love it when people get passed over for something they deserve and everyone full well knows the person that got the job wasn’t the most deserving. My company went through a major culture change which led to getting rid of a lot of people. There was absolutely some dead weight and fat trimming which needed to occur. Now, we are trashing people who have the companies best interest at heart and have remained loyal through the years only to watch completely unqualified and people who failed in their roles get promotion. So, when someone leaves on their own free will now, I always hear that person wasn’t worth a crap anyway, good riddance. Problem is, that’s not a true statement, most times they were strong performers.
It’s the schmoozer on my team who got the promotion. The boys’ club is alive and well.
I guess some of us are just naïve and hope that our work would speak for itself.
Yes!! My mantra and it has worked to a point. The political side of things, will never be that person.
Facts - he/she who is not part of the alliance your good work will go unnoticed
Sounds like an episode of survivor
The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Work in silence for personal accomplishments, but market the hell out of yourself to get paid.
If you don't love (promote) yourself, how can you expect someone to love (promote) you?
ugh
When you start seeing loud lazy idiots climbing up the hierarchy, you need leave as soon as possible. The work environment will become toxic and the company will collapse eventually. You don’t need to be around when it happens.
It’s 100% happening on my team here at Citi. Exactly as you just described. She’s only moving up because she and the boss sit next to each other and we’re down in Tampa. Climbing via proximity and being the teachers pet (always jumping to change something on the calendar and be a secretary because she would be useless otherwise tbh.) trying to leave this team and potentially even this company
💯
Very true! Also, the person who complains the most about others seems to consistently receive praise, recognition, and promotions.
So sad
#overheard (straight from the mouth of our division head) - the ones who leave and who don’t get promoted are not part of the core team. There is the core team and those we will invite into the core team.
I’ve been at this a while and your observations are correct. It’s unfortunate but you really do need to sell yourself and your accomplishments. The really weird thing I’ve learned is: when I’m just getting work done, correct and on time: no one really notices. It’s the people you are slacking off and struggling that get all the attention.
The higher up the ladder you go the less it’s about doing the work but more about promoting yourself and the work of your team.
My advice, build your fan base aka network and develop great professional relationships with your peers at work. So that they promote you versus promoting yourself.
Yeah. We have someone on my team that the only reason she’s moving up in the company/getting attention is because she sits directly next to our manager in NYC meanwhile the rest of us are down here in Tampa. She’s actually incredibly annoying. But because she literally just has proximity she’s being favored. It’s insulting to the rest of us who actually work hard but won’t get noticed because we sit at a different site.
What kinda work do you do in Citi if you don't mind me asking...are you in tech ?
Always the one who claims they're "busy" ALL THE TIME.
It depends on the type of company. At my current one (Fortune 500) it is absolutely true that “networking” is the deciding factor. At my previous (startup) it was the work accomplished and value added.
