I took a mid-level in-house job to get away from the political nature of being a high-level attorney. All I wanted was to do my job well and go home (it's remote so that's a bit of a joke). It turns out that I'm trapped in a political climate that I don't like with a bad boss. I don't play well when you have to continually edit what you say and do. I'm just not built that way. Is there such a thing as a decently paying attorney position that isn't political? I'm low drama!

In house positions tend to be all about politics.

like

Depends on what you mean by “political”. I’ve learned that, much like high school girls who claim to abhor “drama”, attorneys who claim to “hate the office politics” are actually just really bad at fostering strong relationships with the business. I don’t ever, and haven’t ever, edited what I say or toned my opinions down and even in junior positions I had no problem disagreeing with execs, but I’m likable and charming and know how to soften bad news and almost never say “no” (choosing instead to offer options and focus on objectives) and I’ve gotten really far. So if by “I hate politics”, you mean “I just want to give legal advice in a vacuum”, you’re always going to be disappointed.

smart

100% this - humans are inherently political and the most important part of your job in-house is diplomacy and building relationships. Even if you ignore politics, politics will find you so you might as well manage it proactively. You could probably find a govt agency job where you wouldn’t get fired for being this way tho.

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

Since there is a heavy impetus on solving Tree, LinkedList, and Graph problems for tech interviews, it can naturally make freshers believe that these concepts will be used in day-to-day life at work. In reality, most of these DSA concepts are already implemented in some libraries our code uses and we rarely have to code such Algorithms by hand.

Does where you get your masters degree matter? I’m in an online environmental science masters program at an expensive “name-brand” school, but have colleagues telling me I should transfer to a less expensive program to save $ because no one cares about where your degree is from.
