No riskier than underselling yourself and taking a job you’re already underpaid for! The worst they can say is no.
I usually ask for 30-50K more at the minimum depending if it’s a lateral move or a level up. If it’s a place I really want to work at I go less.
I work at a big market but in the last decade my salary increases were 105>120>150>185>240.
105>120 because I threatened to leave for a better offer and my job matched. Same position.
120>150 jumped ship and leveled up
150>185 jumped ship and leveled up
185>240 I freelanced first but didn’t really want to work here but they really needed me so I asked for something ridiculous and they matched.
I ask for 20% plus - not worth learning a whole new job unless there’s more pay, and I expect limited raises afterward because ad agencies aren’t great at COL or merit raises.
I agree. The salary “bump” is essentially your advertising “raise” for the next 5 years (or however long you stay there).
There’s always a little more. Especially if they want you, and if your current agency tries to counter.
