I want to apply for a position at company A. An ex coworker of mine works there. I wonder if it's better to apply through the ex coworker /employee referral or through a third party head hunter?

Asking because I feel employees might not have as strong of an incentive to get me into the company as a third party head hunter. I had a friend who referred me to a position before and it didn't pass. I know it really depends on the employee but wonder how you feel as a recruiter
