I was just watching a YouTube video about the new age of apps and the App Store. A simple concept of a few apps (timers, information apps were two examples) would instantly monetize and bring in thousands of dollars of month. A highly saturated and difficult market to monetize. Were you part of this age? What apps did you contribute or enjoy?

I’m not exactly sure which apps you’re referring to, but I can definitely say I’ve always been into social media. I had TikTok back when it first came out, and it’s crazy to see what it’s become now. Just think about how much money that app makes in a single day!

I meant more utility or smaller scope apps, surely some apps are full fledged platforms or universes. But I think those grew on the foundation of the smaller utility apps

“There’s an app for that.” That’s what I enjoyed during that time. The app store allowed a lot of people to create things and share them. Never really thought of it like that. A ton of accessibility. A lot of platforms don’t have a barrier to entry now, and that was one of the first.

In fact I think that was a catch phrase in an advertisement! I’m glad you remember it too

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.
