I was recently laid off and keeping my role marked "current" on LinkedIn until I land something new, have you done this?

My separation reason was disclosed as "performance-related," but I believe I was part of a small round of cuts for efficiency. How do you handle explaining this in interviews without hurting your chances? Do you respond with an alternative explanation entirely?

I'm of the opinion that it's not that big of a deal to be let go. Everybody is fired at some point in their life, it doesn't have to be some shameful thing. Just talk about what you learned from it and that you're ready to move on.

It’s important to be transparent during the interview process because if you’re chosen as a top candidate, the organization will conduct due diligence, and any discrepancies will eventually be revealed. As a hiring manager, I understand that being laid off is acceptable now, as it’s common in the industry. I’ve personally experienced being laid off twice within 18 months, and it wasn’t due to performance issues; it can happen to anyone.

I am really sorry to hear that. I was laid off during COVID, so I know how tough that is. I always give an alternative explanation in interviews so as not to hurt my chances. I definitely wouldn't tell them you were laid off.

In the US there is a very short list of things your previous company will disclose to a company wanting to hire you. Often it is just dates of employment and job title and if you are eligible for rehire. I would just give your own spin on why you were let go. Most people I know in LinkedIn who are laid off add an end date to their last job and change their profile to the job title they want for their next job. So instead of Company X it just says Principal Product Designer or whatever.

I’m so sorry to hear about you being laid off. I did learn that a lot of supervisors or companies did put Layoff in regards to performance, but later on it was found out that was false information and they were “told” to put that as a comment by higher ups. To me that’s so heartless, a comment like that could cause the employee their unemployment benefits. I was unfortunately apart of the mass RIF (reduction in force, due to executive order) at my company in May of last year, and when I updated my resume I put May 2025 as my end date. If I was you, I would just be transparent as I’ve seen someone else say, and put your end date. During my interviews I’ve learned that the managers are understanding. Hate to say it, but everyone knows that this day and age alot of layoffs and reduction in workforce are happening across the board.

like

I kept it for the month I was laid off and then changed my title to be accurate on paper (most places only look at the month and not the specific date). I was hesitant initially to mention my lay-off but I gathered courage and was upfront in my interviews. I was interviewing for a different role so it did not impact my outcome from the interviews. Even for similar roles, the interviews were the dominant factor in the decision and not that I was laid off or not.

To avoid confusion and to let employers know that you are available to work immediately, I would suggest changing that status and also making sure you have your settings on LinkedIn so that recruiters can both see you and contact you since some do their own sourcing rather than just relying on applications to come to them via the job boards and company website. Most employers have to remember to check the applications on the job boards as many do not have them set up to automatically go through their ATS.

Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.

Went for a pre-employment drug test yesterday. They never asked me if I was on any medications. Now I'm terrified that I should have put ALL my meds, to including my psych meds. I've been sober over 12 years and never touched drugs (just booze) but I'm having a full blown panic attack.
