I was recently laid off but still have a few months of website time. Would you take a less-than-ideal job or try to hold out for something better? I had been applying for months (saw the writing on the wall) without success, so on one hand I think I should just take what I can get (and perhaps keep applying on the side?). On the other, I’ve already switched firms a few times and I don’t want to burn bridges, so I also would hate to accept an offer and then quit shortly afterwards. What to do?!

How big is your cash stash? If the less desirable offer won't damage your long term career goals and the money works, I would take the less desirable job now to keep the lights on. I would plan to give it 18 to 24 months or so before going aggressively back out to the job market. If you cannot stand the idea of grinding out that much time in the less desirable job, that should tell something.

Okay, I’ve seen firms go either way on that. Some firms are looking for the right associates but they are realistic about the time it takes to build trust and know that they’ll have some coming and going and some people who will stick around. You both are taking a chance. It sounds like they are less tolerant of that. If you are the type who’s always building your relationships, I wouldn’t lead them on. They’ll be more valuable allies in the future if you don’t disappoint them in the present.

I’m exactly the same

I lateraled from a small firm to regional big law last year. I was told that my offer was commensurate with class year (5th year). The firm recently increased first year salary, with a 5% increase for all other attorneys. My original salary was equal to the new first year salary. The difference between my new salary and a first year is now $10k. I think it is fairly obvious that the hiring partner was not truthful with me. How would you address this? Is another lateral move my only option?

Can two different recruiters submit you to the same place if they’re submitting 4-5 months apart? I’m not using both concurrently. Recruiter 1 submitted me to places in the beginning of the year and only one interview came out of it. Recruiter 2 wants to submit me to some places now. I’m wondering if there’s going to be any conflict/look bad etc if there’s an overlap.

Does anyone have experience interviewing with Deloitte Internal Services? I had my final interview a week and a half ago, and received positive feedback throughout. The hiring manager had positive things to say and mentioned they hoped to make a decision by the end of last week. It’s now Friday the week after. The role still shows as “Interviews in Process.” We did discuss potential start dates, but no salary. Any experience with receiving offers for an internal services role? Is this common?

I have a wee crush on one of the partners in my firm and I thought he liked me too, but neither of us did anything about it (which is entirely appropriate). That was all pre-Rona. Now I’m leaving the firm and pursuing another opportunity and staying in the same city. Since he’ll no longer be my boss, is there a way to find out if my feeling was correct? How should I go about this? (Especially given Rona?)

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time.
