I went on vacation for a week. Came back to fires and things that should have been taken care of but weren’t. Going on vacation is necessary to prevent burn out but coming back to fires is awful. Would it be better to just never stop working? Obviously not, but it feels that way today! I am great at my job, but the things I’m doing can AND should be done by others when I’m not here. I understand wanting to be irreplaceable but my clients should still be a serviced by my firm while I’m on a beach

I am so sorry. That’s really frustrating.

But keep taking your vacations. Keep unplugging. Definitely have conversations with your colleagues, partners, paralegals about supporting each other.

Tell them this: I’m in-house, Fortune 100 company. I hire outside counsel — selectively — and I’m the client you want. When I find great people on a particular topic, I’m loyal. I don’t want fried, burn-out, exhausted lawyers so freaking tired that I’m the one reading and rereading documents to catch the issues, make them flawless. I want sharp, well-rested and engaged attorneys who offer ideas and solutions worth the pretty penny we pay. Law firms (and corporations) need to get that this is about the TALENT and yeah, that means the PEOPLE, so please, take better care of them, support their time-off, get them unplugged and stop burning them out like they’re replaceable.

I feel this. Partners at my firm rarely, if ever, pick up any slack.

I used to work for a firm that specifically held a brief meeting between certain attorneys if someone was going to be out. We laid the ground rules. If one attorney was going to be out then 2 attorneys would be designated to be on deck, each assigned with one half of the vacationing attorneys case list, and we would quickly chat about the cases and potential fires that could happen and how to handle them.

I also worked at a firm that never did this. Clients were pissed. We dropped the ball. It was easier to stay online than to check out mentally.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I recently left a large lawfirm to go in-house which came with a huge paycut that is not going to be sustainable long term, but needed a remote position to be able to move. I'd like to keep my current job part-time but get back in a lawfirm too.

I'm in the final round of interviews for two internal positions - both vertical. One has FTE's (my first such experience) and the other a much broader scope vs my current role

I had interviewed externally for a role on par w the internal roles, at a smaller and less established company. They confirmed +20% was in their range

How do I push back on my company if they offer less than that, if I do want one of those roles? Without a pay scale, what is the best way to approach?

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.

Let’s get this bowl active and going. What are ATL fishes doing for fun this weekend?

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.

Hey small agency friends with kids! Quick question. Our agency’s family health care is expensive (ranges from $1700/mon with normal deductible to $1100/mon with super high deductible). If anyone out there (at a small NYC agency) has a better plan and is comfortable sharing, would you mind telling me who your company uses? My kids’ college funds thank you!

Has anyone tried Isagenix? Thoughts? Did it work?

For diet reasons, I don't drink alcohol. But I drink sodas occasionally. Like at company happy hours, etc. From a health perspective, is this kind of hypocritical? I think they are both nutritionally near 0 value. I do enjoy the taste of soda more than alcohol. But I can't help but feel like if I'm willing to drink sodas, a beer or two a week shouldn't be much different. If anything, it's lower calorie per can lol.
