I wore business casual to an interview because the job posting mentioned a casual environment. But the second I walked in, everyone looked like they were in the middle of Big 4 busy season. I felt so out of place, but the interviewers were cool about it. Has anyone else ever shown up underdressed to an interview? Did it work out for you?

Let that be a lesson kid. ALWAYS dress to impress. Suited and booted (if male). Once you get the job, dress however you like.

Leaving aside what you should have worn - Big 4 busy season attire is jeans.

Overdress almost always.

Who knows at this point tbh

Always over dress for an interview even internal. No one will ever say wow that person was so overdressed but they might say the opposite

No. I always wear business attire to interviews. Its probably not a big deal as long as you wore business casual... colar shirt slacks and loafers? Last interview I went to they all had jeans on it was Friday so maybe their casual day. I wasn't expecting a call back... I applied for the wrong job so I waa surprised they interviewed me lol.

Once you get the job, and ace the interview, dress whatever you want, but once you get called in for an interview, dress to impress the interviewer

I have been working for accounting firms for over 25 years. Not sure what it was like at your place, but where I have worked, everyone is business casual during busy season.

like

Once hired and onboarded it is business casual. When interviewing it is a business suit, business professional.

All that matters is what the interviewers thought, so wouldn’t worry about that too much

I woe black jeans and a nice sweater to a teaching interview. The school thought I was applying for accounting as they were looking for an accountant. But I’m looking to pivot - so they were actually excited because they’re looking for a financial literacy instructor for their upper school. I think the jeans might’ve not been noticeable since it was black

been in industry (small companies) for 5 years with an active CPA. Wanted to get in SEC reporting roles but almost every company requires 2-year public accounting exp. Is this a dead lock? firms exp matters much more than a CPA license?

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
