I work for a solo who NEVER checks the calendar. I am pretty sure he doesn't have much of a clue as to what's going on with his practice.

Also, I'm pretty sure I am underpaid.

Currently in industry at 135k salary, poor healthcare, amazing wlb, a month of parental leave, work is okay.

I received a promotion earlier this year from an Investment Advisor, AVP to Senior Investment Advisor, VP and moved from $110K to $140K ($130 salary + $10K discretionary bonus) all in. By meeting expectations in 2 pay cycles, the base bumps up to $175K + bonus. Grown in this role over about 10 years with the same firm, MBA + CFA; top 10 city and living comfortably as dual income household.

I'm currently working as an electrical designer in the MEP industry. Has anyone received equity as contingency comp? I have a potential client with a founders dispute. He doesn’t have cash, and the other founder ripped him off and is now running the company. Solos - what does your day look like? Do you work traditional hours? Do you take breaks during the day for personal things such as errands and working out?

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

The past two days I’ve spent to my entire day doing things that really can be done by a paralegal. So I hired a freelance para. Any tips to make this a success? What’s your tips to train and get your para up to speed?

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). What is the right way for me to be compensated in this scenario?
