most stuff is still virtual in MA, but we’ve had zoom depositions and zoom oral arguments. we are also slammed, but none of the senior associates or partners have indicated it’s different than normal. the impression i’ve gotten is that we are always pretty busy- maybe not all practice areas at the same time, but at least one practice area is slammed at any given time. that also might depend on your market though
Some of my clients have made drastic cuts to our bills and what they will pay for, however, the work has been there despite COVID. Wondering whether anyone else has experienced a “tightening of the belt” by insurance companies with regard to billing.
Tell those bastards to pay some Covid relief already!!!
1. Insurance defense associate here. We’ve been slammed. Desperately looking to hire other associates to help with the workload. Some big clients are definitely getting pickier about billables.
2. In TX, we’ve had very few trials. I think since the pandemic started, my office has been to trial maybe 2-3 times. I hear trials will restart beginning in September.
Jury trials are opening up again in south florida next month. First with criminal, then county civil and then circuit civil several months later.
In Kentucky, they are opening up April 1 with in custody criminal trials given first preference, then out of custody criminal trials, and then civil jury trials. They are still setting them though.
Yes, on coverage side. No insight on other question.
1. It differs from firm to firm, as I understand. 2. Two friends of mine tried two different cases here in New Orleans. I also know that an appellate court in the northern part of the state is holding in person oral arguments.
I had a jury trial on a civil case in Denver in October. Shortly thereafter jury trials were put on pause again.
Plaintiff's lawyer here. The carriers have taken very bold positions during the pandemic. GEICO in particular has pushed the limits to see what they can get away with in light of the courts being closed. I imagine you're seeing more work because the Plaintiff's bar is finally filing all those lawsuits that the carriers forced. Also, and since trial dates keep getting pushed back, that's more time to do more discovery.
In NC, the court system is now run by a Republican Chief Justice. It changed hands in January. Instead of taking a stance on Covid, he punted and left it to the individual counties (we can't upset Bubba and Jethro's precious feelings about "science"!). So, guess how that's working out? Some counties are going forward with jury trials while others don't even have small claims court open. Most attorneys (on both sides) are not happy with it. The older generation is particularly concerned.
Insurance Defense Associat as well. Also slammed with new cases.
Insurance defense associates here. We are getting slammed in Seattle with no end in sight and no help. All the defense firms here are hiring right now.
Bay Area insurance defense associate here. I’ve got an avalanche of work with no end in sight. We hired 2 new associates and I’m still buried.
