Lower taxes = higher take home pay.
Salaries are higher but there is also higher cost of living in the large metropolitan areas, high education costs (uni can go upwards of 20-60K/yr), healthcare costs, etc. They make way more in the US but also have higher costs, although even accounting for that they still have higher discretionary income to spend.. most if not all of the time.
As for transferring, unless there is a strong business case or you find a team in the US willing to sponsor your work visa, getting relocated to the US and ultimately paid more for the same role (if a lateral transfer) may be difficult for most. Even if it was a promotion, you would still be up against local American talent that don’t require work visa sponsorship, international moving costs, etc. And there’s way more people in the US to begin with for employers to choose from.
Big assumption that Brits would be fine living there lol - but that is how it works. My US equivalents earn way more
More employment protection in the UK. Mandatory holidays 20 days + public holidays.
Pension provisions.
No additional “sales tax” on top of displayed amount.
No state tax.
Closer to Europe and don’t have to holiday only in the US.
Haha!
