Is date rate defined in your contract? If not, it means whatever they want it to mean...
Thank you for everyone’s responses. Very helpful! I haven’t received an official contract yet but wanted to ask b/c this is my first time charging a day rate versus hourly.
As others have said, clarify with the company how they define a day in regards to day rate (IMO, it means as many hours as they want, up to 24) before you quote; Also confirm policy for consecutive days (e.g., if you work M-F / 5 consecutive days in at $X, make sure the 6th consecutive day (Sat) is at a higher rate - this comes up a lot on travel jobs, rush jobs, launches...
Good luck with the gig!
If the term “day rate” is used in the employment contract, ask them to include the definition or suggest a definition to be included. Eg : day = no less than 7 hours no more than 9 hours in a 24 hour period. No more than 5 days in seven day period or etc. with outside whatever constraints at 1.5x or something. Spell it out in writing, now is the time. It’s all negotiable
Anything over 40 hours a week should be 1.5x rate, at least in CA.
Day rate = 10X hourly rate
No, if you’re on a daily or weekly rate they can exempt you from overtime. You should build a little cushion into your day rate (though HR will balk if you get too expensive).
Def ask if the expectation is 8 or 10 hours a day so you know how to adjust your rate. Day rates or project fees benefit the agency bottom line
I once worked a weekly rate and you can bet your butt they had me there Saturday and Sunday.
Oh my! I’m not surprised.
