If trying to shmooze doctors isnt getting you cases, as a pi atty, how do you get cases? The only way, it seems, to get cases is by having a doctors office refer you but they are all in bed with other firms who feed them work and I don't have that luxury--to feed them work....any pointers? I cannot get out of the glorified associate role, and doesnt feel like the juice is worth the squeeze anymore.

I’ve gotten maybe 3 referrals over the years from doctors offices; I’ve gotten over a hundred from referring attorneys. You’d be surprised how many offices are willing to send you minimum policy or disputed liability cases for 20-30% referral fees. That’s where you’re going to really get your referrals from.

My buddy gets tons of referrals from other lawyers in different areas of law like bankruptcy, family law etc. that he meets at bar mixers, or young lawyers association. I would recommend going to any mixers where you can meet other lawyers, get their cards, message them and discuss sending you referrals in exchange you’ll refer clients back to their specialty.

I’ve gotten several new clients as a result of from past clients recommending me to their friends or family members who had been injured. I’ve also gotten referrals from attorneys in other practice areas that I’ve kept in touch with. I’ve also gotten cases as a result of friends/associates in my church and recreational activities/hobbies who know I am an attorney. I would say the best thing you can do is develop a good reputation so that people feel comfortable recommending you to their patients, friends, associates, family, etc.

Where there’s less law firms. Less competition more pie.

Getting my JD now btw. Law sucks. Don’t look forward to practice. Other fields are worse during inflation.

JD advantage roles and pi practice is the way.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
