One piece of advice that could be helpful for police officers joining the department is to prioritize building positive relationships with the community they serve. This means taking the time to get to know community members, listening to their concerns and needs, and working collaboratively with them to address issues and promote safety. This can help to build trust and mutual respect between the police and the community, which can lead to better communication and cooperation in preventing and solving crimes.
Don’t ever put your handcuffs on another person’s prisoner and don’t let anyone take your prisoner with your handcuffs. You’ll never see them again. lol
Agreed with above!
When you get to the Division that will be your first assignment ,sart learning everything you need to know about the do's and dont's while your there for a few years there. Also start working different assignments and start working with officers with the most senior years working that division, and make a point of asking all the questions ,that only the senior officers will know how to answer.
After a few yrs of working your first division , you'll be kooking forward to working you next Divsio
Always be vigilant and stay away from excessive use of authority. Your actions must always be humane and based on the oath you swore as a protector of citizens.
If you’re in Illinois, get out. If not, just don’t be overly hard on yourself. Mistakes will happen. Just learn from it.
Don’t wreck a police car. Seriously.
If you shoot someone, the department effectively has to defend you and the cost generally doesn’t come from the department’s budget. But wreck a car? Oh, that is money right out of the police budget.
One of the best pieces of advice came from my father who was a cop for 42 years. He told me to always show respect to the people who you arrest. A little dignity goes a long way. Not everyone you deal with is a piece of garbage.
I love this. You never know who you are dealing with and what they are going through. We are not the ones to judge or say who deserves kindness so give it to everyone
Never accept a prisoner from another officer without searching them yourself.
Never accept a gun from another officer without clearing it yourself. Always stick your pinky in the chamber. You will occasionally fail to see a cartridge in there.
Its not personal. Nothing anyone out there says or does to you is personal.
Don’t treat crooks like straights. Let your hatred show. Tell them you will try your level best to put them in prison every time you see them in your area. If you show kindness they will keep coming back because they think you are a sissy.
Don’t lie. Don’t lie in court. Don’t lie to your sergeant or admin. I have seen guys get fired for lying when the thing they lied about would have meant no more than a scolding or a day off. If any judge thinks you lied soon all the judges at that courthouse will never trust your word again. Don’t lie to crooks. Crooks know what you can and can’t do to them, so stick to threats you can actually carry out..
Learn from the old guys. They can teach you their mistakes, which they learned from the generation they replaced.
Tell the truth. The whole truth. All the time. Unless your wife asks you if she looks ok in her new dress. In only that case, be creative.
Get to know the people in the neighborhood that you are patrolling. It creates a better relationship making it easier for everyone
Learn how to de- escalate situations as much as possible. Do not instigate it or try to abuse your power over someone it makes everything worse
Evaluate your reason for wanting to join the force. This will be your why that you can always go back to when things get hard
Study how other competent officers have handled various issues. If you're less comfortable with certain types of investigations, look up other officers' reports of those types of investigations.
Keep your personal life to yourself. People will spread rumors like wildfire and that’s just the beginning lol
Listen to your training officers. Don’t not take short cuts when it comes to reports and paperwork. Those horrible citations or reports that you take shortcuts on can stick with you forever. It’s not just the violator that sees it. It goes to court and your prosecutors, judges and defense attorneys all see the mistakes you make and shortcuts you take. Do solid work from the start. They will remember you for the good or bad work you do so make it good the first time.
Follow ur instinct and use critical thinking
