If you could wave a magic wand and change one law about restaurant work, what would it be? For me, it’s ending the tipped minimum wage. I’m tired of my income depending on strangers’ moods. Curious what’s at the top of your list.

Unionize servers and bartenders. So that we can all come together to decide what we deserve and help elevate and educate those new to the industry.

I’d go for guaranteed sick leave. Too many of us are punished for needing rest. We deserve to be protected when we’re sick, not guilted into working.

I’m with you! I think tipping culture is stressful - and it also skews what people make between the FOH and BOH - which causes unnecessary tension.

Summer intern at BCG. I've been told by a few people that you need to spend your first few cases "earning your stripes" to gain staffing optionality or be servile/loyal to a pyramid to gain access to the cooler case work within that PA. It's seemed particularly emphasized at times.

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
