I've never really heard of anyone having a problem moving from agency to in-house. A lot of creative teams understand how demanding the agency side is and are grateful for the breadth of someone's skill after working in an agency. Are you encountering difficulty applying to in-house roles?
I wouldn't necessarily say "it's easy" lol especially in this job market, but I think it's a logical career pivot that you won't have to spend a lot of time explaining. Your skills are already highly transferable. It's just a matter of using your existing network to land a position somewhere
It’s not easy. I know—I’ve been trying. There are far more AE-type positions brand side. And creatively-driven in-house agencies are few. So OP—do share findings, I’m all ears.
Im so invested in this thread. Same boat as OP. I’ve done the agency hustle, I’ve seen it all, I’ve grown bored of the awards…more money for less trauma sounds amazing.
Educate the rest of us poor souls when you figure it out, OP!
gotta simply understand what in-house needs vs agency. lots more politicking, a lot more efficiency, a lot less about the creative.
if you can fold that into how you present yourself, it'll be easier.
I’m confident I can - what I’m not confident in is how to locate and assess those opportunities. There’s a title exchange rate and jargon I’m not fluent in having only lived in the agency world thus far.
This won’t be true everywhere, but the strategy part of my role greatly expanded when I went in house. There aren’t really brand strategists at most public companies, as wild as that sounds. There are brand marketers, but that’s a different role and skill set. So I’ll agree with CD3 that it’s less about the creative, but add that your strategic chops and years of partnering closely with planners will benefit you.
As for how I got the job: I went 8 years ago from a holding company agency to what was then a startup (now publicly traded). There was no 1:1 job (and per my comment above, I don’t think a 1:1 really exists for CDs), so I sold myself for the closest comparable role. I’ve had two subsequent roles as the company grew and am finally back in a CD role. It’s been a wild ride but I am paid well (plus six figures in equity each year) and work a firm 40 hours/week. I like the work and love my coworkers.
