What do you like about the agency side? I made the transition and eventually switched back to agency. I missed the big picture strategic thinking. It was fun and had good perks, but didn't challenge me enough.
If you want a better work life balance but like the strategy I would recommend switching to the client side.
I will say-I don't have an MBA and found it easy to find a job on the client side. I think that the "MBA to get in the door" is phasing out on the client side from what I have seen. That could also be because I am not in NY or LA. Also- I would be hesitant about saying that clients hire agencies for strategy. Each situation is a bit different of course, but our agency is just one of our many partners for the overall marketing planning that our team is handling internally. CRM campaigns are not touched by our agency, overall organizational marketing strategy is not touched by our agency. I would recommend applying to both AM and client side.
The only thing that I truly like about the agency side is the strategy input. I’ve been looking to transition because I want a better work life balance and overall just need something new
I would recommend figuring out what it is you like about strategy. Is it the consumer insight? Client facing aspect? Vision setting? And is it the account that is hindering your work life balance, or a function of your agency? Also be realistic....most planners aren’t qualified to go client side (again, most) unless you have an MBA maybe...but even so, there is a reason why clients hire media agencies. To be the experts in strategy.
I think an account management role publisher side would be a smart and realistic starting point with low risk - if you hate it, you can always move into a different role once you’re in. And once you prove your strategic value I’m sure any company would want to encourage finding the right role internally for you.
Good points. I forgot my client wasn’t the only one that existed for a minute :)
