Drinking was the best and everything else was the worst.

drinking (with a nice landscape, or ocean view) is always the best

We went to a sprawling ranch-type resort. Getting drunk and floating down a river in a tube, going to a shooting range, golfing, and getting a party bus to go a club (with bottle service).

It got lit.

Take me with you next time!!

My retreat was at the local community college and the firm brought sandwiches in 😂

funny

Went to Vegas lol. The parties were the best.

Sounds like torture. I don’t want to be around the people I work with for a minute more than necessary. I’d rather be given a wellness stipend to take myself and one person I care about on a 3 day vacation and be at the kind of firm that offered ample vacation time and encouraged people to actually use it

We were at a hotel on a beach. We had a day where the affinity groups met up and the partners in my affinity group arranged it at a beach side bar with fire pits. The partners opened tabs and there was lots of free flowing alcohol while we chatted for a few hours.

I am frustrated as a Gay Woman who has given her all for 30+ years grinding to be the best. I have been in closet, out of closet, in-between and am tired of it. I want to be VALUED as a human being. I have gone from Rock Star to problem when people "found out". I have trained and promoted hundreds of people and been passed over for promotions because of not being a man. I have trained men with less experience, worse results only for them to move forward. If Diversity is important...prove it!

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

What's the best course of action when you find yourself at a job that's far more chaotic than you assessed while interviewing? Upon starting this job a couple of weeks ago, I discovered between the time I interviewed and my start date they had hired a new CEO, laid off all of their off-shore teams, changed my position to a new hiring manager, and added an on-call rotation to all engineering teams. None of this showed up in my research of the company or my interviews.

Additional Posts in Millennials in Law

Friend and I who went to law school together want to go into practice together (specifically, COA/HOA collections); however, she is not licensed, yet. I am. She would be working the same as I, just unable to give advice, file, etc. (all the things that require a license). Our deal would be that upon her licensure, she would get a percentage ownership of the firm (probably 49-50%). However, I litigate, and would anticipate bringing on cases to the firm outside of just HOA/COA stuff. (Cont’d)…

Kind of having a breakthrough realizing that self-acceptance is the key to personal growth. Whenever I failed to achieve a goal usually I would just mentally berate myself and couldn't get over that thinking that would motivate me to do better, now that I'm okay with giving myself some latitude and accepting where I'm at and loving myself despite it I have actually made a lot more progress.

My email writing process: I start it. I get distracted with something else. I come back to it. I write it. Get distracted. I spell check it. I get distracted. I spell check it again. I reread it. Rewrite it. Spell check. Distracted. Go back to it and double check the receiving email addresses. Then if I remember, I hit send
and then. After I send it. I find a typo. Ugh.

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

HELP.

I've been in practice for about a year at a high stakes plaintiffs litigation firm. I make $85/year, I'm in the office at 8 and leave around 5:30. I work occasionally on Saturdays. When we have something big coming up, I stay extra to get it done in time. I've never missed a deadline.

I had a meeting this week where the partners told me they questioned my commitment because they were working more hours than me.

Am I the problem here and should work more, or is it time to find a new job?

Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

I'm a 1st year @ a civil lit defense firm. I summered here and got the "our firm culture is amazing, we want to grow and help you learn" pitch and accepted the offer of $75k, thinking that was what most other associates make (I'm 1st gen). But today I found out that associates with 4yrs experience are making $80k; for hitting the 1950 billable req., the bonus is $1k. I've also found there are big DEI problems that I can't overlook. It feels like the pitch was a big lie. Advice?
