I’m 50 and I just decided to own it. I keep everything on there. Fuck ‘em if they don’t like my age. I’ve got better social in my book than any millennial could ever even come close to. Fuck this hiding our age shit. I’m not going down like that.
I love this reply
I keep it. So many damn isms we face and agism is another thing we have to fight. For a bit I thought that it was the least offensive ism so maybe it needs to be deprioritized but it feels like a good time to fight em all. Age = experience and adds to the diversity of ideas. If we all pretend to be in our 30’s or hide the fact that we are in our 40-50-60’s we reinforce the notion that these need to be youthful industries to thrive. The rules of one-page resumes are dead and thoughtful spillover to a second page is the norm. Linkedin is a go-to stalking source to preemptively see who I’m meeting with and for me personally, I approach people differently who are older than me... a little more reverence I guess bc of the wisdom and experience they bring. At almost 43, i proudly display all my shit. I recognize that there are CEO’s younger than me and I may be “old” or “expensive” for my level but each of us plays a role in helping dump that BS. I think everything you mention above is valid. And your perspective is appreciated. Especially if you're on the business side and employed. If you're over 40 and currently looking for a creative role, it's pretty rough out there. But what I find funny is a lot of places are looking for an empathetic leader. And you can only get there through experience.
I am 50. I cut 5 years off and own the rest. Still making good money and using retinol every night. 😂 IMO 40 feels young to be cutting. If you want to earn that salary, you need to demonstrate the leadership experience that comes with it. Good luck OP!
Cut? I am proud of what I have done in my career and my education. It all makes me who I am today. A job where that doesn’t matter is not a job for me.
I’m also 40. I cut off everything before 2005, pretty sure everyone at my new job thinks I’m 35-37.
It’s funny, I never shied away from age (kind of felt like it was a badge of honor) but now think it does hinder me.
I only mention where I graduated, and not the year. And I don’t list every job I’ve had before 2000.

Havas - be confident in the experience you’ve had so far, but you really need only highlight last 10 years and make it read like a case study. Very succinct and results oriented. No need to put dates on your education. Lastly, you’re still a youngster at 40. Don’t sweat it.
I believe in transparency—some people will see lack of dates as trying to hide something. Experience and being a seasoned professional is a good thing. I’ve gotten this feedback from multiple recruiters. Graduated in 1992 and have it listed on my resume. On the 2nd page of my resume I have a section titled Early Experience and simply list agency name, title, and dates. This has worked for me—if you are meeting with someone of similar age, you may have a connection from a previous agency or a shared experience that makes for good conversation and common ground.
So people do this? I would love to try but my best agencies were in the beginning.
I connected with someone recently who was a senior person I worked with at my first agency 24 years ago. He remarked that I didn’t have that agency on my LinkedIn and that could be seen as suspicious. He had a good suggestion- if you have multiple agencies in the same holding companies you could collapse under there holding company name. 🤷🏻♀️
I'm with you all. Anything before 2007 is off my resume. Which now seems kinda long too.
What's your position?
I’m 48 and still rising and enjoying it. Clients want experience and creativity, and as agencies pivot to more consulting and advisory services, playing to your age is an advantage. Agencies need to take on the tough stuff - issues management and crisis as brands spend less and less and less on “ads”.
This HBR article has some good data about ageism and how to deal with be unemployed. It says 15 years of experience is where ageism really starts to kick in.

I’ll be 55 in a few weeks and I appreciate that this thread is making me re-think what’s on my resume. Thinking now of taking off the earliest stuff that is of no consequence and would have no bearing other than to age me...makes sense to me.
I think there is a middle ground I see people with 15 years of experience with internships on their LinkedIn, why? Keep what’s relevant. I did take the years off of my education.
