I went for an engineering degree and got a masters in Supply Chain Management a few years later. I wanted to be an industrial engineer, but as I got older, I decided on a more managerial role, so I studied SCM. You can use your gap year to research what career paths you will be more likely to enjoy in either engineering or supply chain. I know a few who have also transitioned between fields with the right experience and education.
Supply Chain seems more relevant these days, it’s never going away. You have so many options, you can work for logistics companies, manufacturers, ocean or air carriers. It’s not easy to get educated in this field, unlike Marketing which is so saturated now.
Go for supply chain. Most of the roles here are in demand. You can even transition to different roles.
To be very honest, if you want to have more options later on, choose supply chain. Your choices in engineering will be very limited.
