I’m a midlevel in a relatively niche regulatory space but would like to give back to certain communities in need of free legal services. My questions are: does anyone do this on the side, and how do you go about handling matters unrelated to your regular practice? For example, things like expungements or other filings that aren’t necessarily adversarial.

It's not bad - a lot of stuff like expungements are simple; a lot of other things, like advice clinics, are tailored to attorneys with little experience in a given area; and you just need to make sure you have enough time to be competent in everything else, like full representation

Make certain that you are covered with legal malpractice separate from the firm’s. If you can’t find someone else to cover malpractice insurance, then don’t do pro bono, it isn’t worth the risk.

Check with your local legal aid. They may have the training, case pipeline and malpractice that will help you do this work. And thank you for giving back!

Many cities have Volunteer Lawyer Projects where you can volunteer to take a variety of cases - my wheelhouse was non-contested divorce actions - where the staff prepares most of the documents and you are essentially there for the hearing. I loved it. They covered their volunteer attorneys with malpractice insurance. Wills for Heroes (or similarly named) is also a great option.

One of my senior managers is a boomerang and told me she was laid off when she was 7 months pregnant about 10 years ago. I think she was a senior or manager. She was in a specific group and everybody was laid off. It wasn’t performance based.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.
