I'm a sort of a self-proclaimed Excel nerd. And I mean, will completely get lost in trying to create a program within a program (for acct purposes of course). Wanted to start a thread that potentially excited others of my kind in sharing some interesting/unique/complicated tools they've created for anything accounting/finance related. And I mean ANYTHING...

Shoot!

Mine is super simple, though I want to learn the programming part of it.

Created a spreadsheet that I can paste invoice #s and amts from vendor statements on the first sheet, and paste the inv #s and TC Balances as text on the 2nd sheet from the Supplier Invoice data I pulled from our ERP. The first sheet will then populate either "Not Found," "Posted," or "Paid" next to each invoice in the Status Column.

Also created a calculation spreadsheet that will automatically compute the splits, tax breakouts and then the splits of both the GL account for the main expense of the invoice and the tax split at one time, a calculation for the sub total and it's split if I am given the main total and need to break out the sales tax that we pay directly to the state, metric tons to pounds converter and a pounds to metric tons converter.

Like I said, all super super simple. Lol

That was EXACTLY the initial purpose of workbook. To stay on track for when price increases would be needed, and justified. To a private client, doesn't matter so much (except for your own informational purposes), but with government clients you're expected to divulge you're entire business to them.

I'd love to speak more. I'm actually pretty new to this platform, but I'll check back tomorrow to see if there is some way we can privately communicate.

sounds nice to have all of that time

You only have the time that you make! Furthermore, a lot of my time spent in Excel is purposely done-so in an attempt to create more time.

Where does all your time go?

Want to be like this one day lol

That day could be today! What are you interested in being able to do in Excel?

Can you provide a few examples of what you’ve done? Also, how do you learn new things and approaches?

I’ve been working to an unhealthy degree lately. And I’ve been making the excuse that I have a lot of work right now, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m addicted to it. Part of it is anxiety and perfectionism. But my behavior is now actively harmful to myself and starting to harm my marriage.

How do I stop? I’m not talking work-life balance. I mean, how do I say, “I don’t care that the client wants this tomorrow and I’m not close to done, I’m going to sleep tonight”?

Does anyone know how litigation finance works on the plaintiff side? If someone wanted to bring a lawsuit against their former employer would a general contingency arrangement with a plaintiff’s firm make sense? Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?

Got hired 3 years ago- newly created staff accountant role with the plan that it’ll go into a senior and then manager role. 1.5 years in I get a title promotion to senior, told I’ll get more duties, start supervising AP, and get monetary promotion to match next year. Got way more work, but nothing else promised within that year. Told next money bump would be manager role (no raise for senior still) and I need to take on more and start supervising AP. Again, seeing nothing…time to leave?
