I'm a very junior first-gen who was unfortunately laid off two weeks ago. I had been having issues at work for a while, voiced them, got put on a PIP in October, and then finally was let go. I've never been in this situation before, and I'm having trouble navigating it. Any tips? I had started looking for new positions back in July, but the market isn't ideal. I wouldn't say I feel completely hopeless at the moment; I just need some guidance. Thank you!

Could you talk more about what kinds of issues you raised concerns about?

And how quickly were you placed on a PIP after you raised those concerns?

I also advise consulting with several plaintiff-side employment lawyers ASAP. The initial calls will be free.

If you’d like to chat about how to prepare for the calls, please feel free to DM.

Go talk to your law school career counselor to get some advice. Also have them review your resume and cover letter. Find a recruiter you like. Apply like a mad woman. Connect to people on LinkedIn and reach out for informational interviews. Read the book designing your work life balance and figure out if the law is what you really want to do (it wasn’t for me and I have a law adjacent job).

Keep applying and keep reaching out. Remember——you only need one offer.

Not every firm is right for every person!

You’ve got this.

I agree but don't use a recruiter just apply directly on websites for all junior openings on law firms website regardless of the group.

I'm sorry to hear that! It is hard and frustrating in this market. Keep reaching out to folks, cast a wide net and (as hard as it is) look for silver linings-- there is a lot of change in the legal industry right now so can be a good time to land in an innovative role as the industry develops.

Thank you!

I am sorry that this happened to you, but I don’t think your being first-gen should garner you any more sympathy. Crappy luck is crappy luck. Keep applying, keep an open mind, and something will work out for you.

Not sure where in my post I asked for sympathy, but from your replies it seems like you're set in your ways. Wishing you the holiday season you deserve

I’m sorry this happened, but it happens a lot more frequently than you’d think. Luckily you’re junior, so you’ll land on your feet (it might just take a minute since the market is what it is). Have you reached out to a recruiter? I’ve worked with Vered Krasna before and she’s wonderful!

Good to know! I used a recruiter as a junior, but that was a long time ago!

I'm feeling a lot of anger towards my manager (now he's acting normal but there were moments where he was condescending/dismissive/mocked my and others work/arrogant/said stuff was "wrong" constantly/belittling the difficulty of tasks etc. in the past project).
Maybe it is "standard chewing out" but it bothered me a lot. So much that I find myself still getting all fired up inside thinking about it...
Idk how to let go of this :/ Thoughts?

🐠, I was laid off from industry during covid and started consulting this year, which was a step back in terms of level and salary. I have received an offer that would allow me to course-correct and advance past where I was before. I like my current firm and have put a lot of effort into making it my new home; however I don’t like my project and am stuck on it. I am terrified of making a move so soon into a role that isn’t a fit or worse, results in another layoff. Appreciate all perspective!

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.

Have a big interview tomorrow. The question I dread the most is about why you’re looking for a new job. The honest answer is that there isn’t enough work to go around at my agency and I want to get ahead of the inevitable layoffs. What’s the best way to tell them this? Do I just make something else up entirely?

Hello Fishes,

I am new to the investing world. I have invested some 80k in Nifty fifty index funds. I wanted to increase my investment in other MFs and stocks.

Can you advise how to start it considering short term and long term financial goals.

Short term goals - like for 2-3 years

Long term goals - like for 5-6+ years or more depending upon the performance

I have seen multiple you tube videos but seems to get confused on how to start and which funds to pick.

Thank you!
