I’m almost 4 years in but I still feel like a a baby when I first start a new job especially a new disease state and I tend to doubt myself when clients come back with a lot of comments saying it’s wrong which makes me want to quit my job and feel awful about it. I also get trapped up in the nuisance of thinking about client strategy and how it can make a better story for them but i shoudlnt reinvent the wheel. Anyome else feel that way?

I started as a writer and moved into Strategy. If you're getting things "wrong" it can mean that the science and data is not represented accurately and/or your writing isn't compliant with their legal and promotional review standards. First step: find out what "wrong" means. Next: look at websites for other brands from that company to see the tone, and how "bold" or "creative" their copy is. For science and data, any new disease you start on, go to the following sources in this order: Patient advocacy or research foundations- read how they define the disease and treatment. Next, go to association of treaters of that disease - ophthalmologist, urologists, endocrinologists etc. Look for patient resources or education on their sites, and, look for most recent guidelines on treatment of disease on their site. Read the guidelines and note all the branded treatments mentioned in the disease you're working in. Next, go to their HCP and patient websites to see how they communicate the disease, their MOA, endpoints for efficacy, etc. This can be accomplished in a 4-5 hour period and you will have a great understanding of the disease and how it's treated. If you are still getting "wrong" comments, then ask for your agency's medical director to review your work, and, tell your account team to request sales training modules on the brand you're working on from the client. That is where I used to start, so you can request that first as soon as you join a new brand team.

What’s your role/department? I’m 15+ years in as an account person and still get things wrong when starting on a new disease state- a learning curve is natural.

Over time you’ll start to see parallels not necessarily in the details of the diseases/brands you have worked on, but in the problems to solve, category dynamics, even client dynamics. That’s called experience and the only way to grow it and in turn grow your confidence is over time. At 4 years into their career, I’d much prefer someone on my team (in any department) who reflects on constructive feedback than someone overconfident who thinks they know it all.

I will say if you aren’t already a strategist, but find yourself thinking a lot about strategy and how to tell a better story you may want to think about a move to strategy while you’re still early in your career!

I’m a medical writer! I was in house closer to strategy but was laid off and took the first job I could in agency.

I genuinely hate writing and would like to move on to strategy but I’m not even sure how. Thank you for your words of encouragement!

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
