I'm at a state agency that has budget problems, my higher ups have given no indication of lay offs, but the budget picture is not rosy and I'm the least experienced lawyer in the office. I also had a severe medical issue that required me to take two months off before it was addressed. Any advice for me? Id like to stay here longer to get back to normal after my medical episode, my boss continually assures me that I'm a valued employee, and our office consistently has too much work.

Why are you self firing? If a new job comes along, consider it but leaving a perfectly good job because there may be layoffs is kind of silly. Also, in times of stress, lawyers that have other lawyers reporting to them (if they are not the top lawyers) are the first to go.

helpful

I also just got back from a 2 month medical leave so I feel vulnerable.

You already know the truth.

It doesn’t matter that your boss values you, it doesn’t matter that you have entirely too much work, doesn’t matter that the higher-ups haven’t telegraphed layoffs (they’d never do that anyways).

When cuts happen, you’re typically going to cut the lowest person on the totem pole. The more experienced lawyers can do your job, you can’t do their’s.

Yeah I'm updating my interview materials.

Community, I’ve been meeting with a lot of people regarding next steps in my career. One of the best pieces of advice I received is to avoid micro-managing executive staff (agency leadership), as it puts downward and unwelcome pressure on people’s managers and ultimately oneself. Based on your experience in the last 2 years are there:
- Agencies you would steer clear from because their leadership micromanages
- Agencies you would recommend because their leadership gives you room to grow

Thx 🙏🏼

Has anyone reevaluated their retirement methods after a life-altering experience? I used to invest a lot more ($5k or so a month), but after losing one of my parents last year (mid-50s), I’ve wondered if it’s better to just enjoy life as we are living it. So, I started investing a lot less. But I always see people on here talking about all of these retirement schemes (backdoor Roth, mega-backdoor Roth, etc.) and I’m wondering if there’s a happy middle ground somewhere.

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

Anyone know when Ch. 7 BKs must close by? Is this changed by when there are adversary proceedings (alleged fraudulent transfers made to a bank for CC payments)? Asking for my friend who is unfortunately involved bc of his parents, who are the debtors (he isn’t a defendant or a debtor in this, but the payments were made to a CC in his name—a CC he didnt know was opened in his name).

Its in Texas, and the initial BK filing was made about 23 months ago. TIA!
