I’m considering going to grad school to accelerate my career. But I’m worried about cost (my agency only reimburses $3k a semester) and I’m not sure what type of program I should pursue. Any recos?

Going to school for what? Are you going to change industries? I have a master’s and if you’re staying in the same industry DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Honestly - even if you want to change industries - network and take a pay cut - you truly don’t need a graduate degree

There are one-off classes and “bootcamps” you can take like General Assembly if you want to learn more skills and make you more valuable. They don’t require the financial commitment that grad school does.

That said, if you want to stay in advertising, I would strongly encourage you to talk to your management and ask if that will make you more likely to get promoted. They might even recommend programs to you.

You’re at director level now - where are you trying to get?

The only thing I might consider would be something to do with data, IF you are thinking of transitioning into tech or client side insights. But not if it puts you into debt.

like

As someone who took general assembly and is currently doing a masters in data science, GA is a pretty good and much cheaper alternative. Youre just not going to be taught a ton of the math behind the models. Also, if you know some C++, Georgia Tech is offering an online masters in data science for $7k, and its really highly regarded

Many of you are suggesting a graduate degree isn’t worth it. Probably true if you plan to stay in advertising. But if you’d like to go client side, where degrees are much more valued/requires, it is an important thing to have on your resume. You should think about where you would like to end up and then see if the degree is required for that.

Look at the mini MBA from mark ritson at marketing week. It’s awesome. I wouldn’t spend money on grad school unless you want an MBA to go client side...but even then you might have to take a lower paying job than strat director to be like a brand manager or something like that ...but there could be longer term upside to that if you can swing it and really want to make that move.

It’s tough to say if it will have much influence on your career at this stage.

I’m about to pursue a PhD in a non-advertising related field, so I understand the allure, but I’m doing so for my own pleasure.

My advice would be to consider your motivation.

I graduated in May of 22. I transitioned from being an intern to being a full time counselor, now for 6 months. I feel like I might be catching my agency at a tough time, but as an employee it doesn’t seem to be trying anything to keep me here besides the occasional ‘motivational’ posts from the administrative team. I felt like I was lowballed during my offer, and my negotiation salary was denied since this is technically my first “professional” job. Pt 2 in comments:
