It depends on the size/complexity of the business and the ownership structure. Large businesses subject to SOX with complex accounting would favor a candidate with heavy A&A background. Privately held businesses with less A&A complexity are often more interested in managing taxable income.

Would be better to get into high finance but audit will help you a little bit.
Where you went to school has nothing to do with getting into high finance.
Start with FP&A as a Sr Associate.
Very few cfos I know are from tax. About 50% audit/accounting background and 50% finance/FP&A
What about looking into some M&A strategy type roles? That could bode well for tax background looking to shift. Corporate finance at a company can as well.
Audit will help certainly too, but if you already have the financial background from tax, it’s not going to propel you to CFO but will more aid in climbing up a CAO latter.
For context, the CFOs at my last 2 companies have been lawyers. Next in line at current company is someone with corp finance, strategy background. It’s less common for CAOs and accountants to go directly into CFO roles now without positioning it right or gathering some other experience within the organization (treasury, FP&A, Strategy, Legal, etc.).
Are you in public accounting currently? What size firm? What makes you think you are CFO material?
Yes
Local, planning on moving to big 4.
