@SD why is it always the burden of the receiver of the biased treatment to educate and fix the problem that they didn’t create?
@Senior copywriter 1 I saw it as a playbook for dismantling a systemic bias, in RBG’s case gender bias. The way she thought about winning the war with a series of coordinated and tactical battles that didn’t all centre around women’s rights, but around things that the existing power structure (men) could get behind and understand. She knew that they’d be outraged by a single father being denied welfare so she used that to establish precedent. She framed issues in ways men could comprehend and empathize with. I think there are some interesting parallels there.
It’s hard because so much of the burden to educate or fix a bad situation falls on the impacted group and that takes away energy and time. But at the same time - who better to lead than those affected? Even though it’s not my job to educate everyone, I carefully consider most opportunities to do so.
TLDR; When I feel too exhausted to educate, I allow myself to step back and do the self care thing. When I have an opportunity to educate though, I take it if I can. It’s a power move and I feel that I on an individual level can decide what feels right to take on in context.
I am non-American white woman, excelling at my skills but also pushing for accountability, and this depicts exactly what I'm experiencing as well. Microagression is well known tool used to push people out. Looks better on their books if you're the one that leaves. The "old ways" stay in place and "problem" is eliminated. Hang in there if you can, stand your ground, and don't quit. I hope we can find some solutions here, together, on how to proceed at this point...
actually in this loop now 😑
Watch the RBG documentary. I felt it was a good lesson for how to systematically dismantle bias.
It definitely sucks..
👩🏽🎨 Super Facts. This feeling is too real.
@MM1 - I think SD1 was responding to my q about what are the people being impacted supposed to do? I wish it wasn’t the impacted person’s burden to fix it, and I agree - it shouldn’t be. But since I can’t make the agency or leader change their ways, I can only take steps to minimize the personal impact of their ways.
I definitely experienced this at Reprise Media!
Strategy Director what points from the RBG doc do you feel addressed dismantling racism? I watched it and didn't have the same takeaway.
