I’m feeling so distraught. Rejected from my final round today for an associate role at a notable strategy firm. I’m just tired of SAP. Any words of wisdom? Would’ve literally taken any salary (cont)

Continuing my mental health rehabilitation program. Story time children, gather round:

When I first graduated from undergrad, I didn’t have a job. I moved home with my folks in my childhood bedroom and began applying for jobs. It was a sultry July, deep in the heart of Northern Virginia. Cicadas were chirping in the trees. Vuvuzelas were wailing on the TVs.

I was sad.

I interviewed at an Aldi (great store!) for a cashier position because I just needed some cash. 500 folks applied. It was clear I wasn’t even a top half of candidates. Humbled.

But, two weeks later, I got a call back from a firm offering me a position as a project accountant. Not the sexiest job, but it was an opportunity that I badly needed. I packed two suitcases and a guitar and headed south.

When I arrived, one of my first responsibilities was to take physical, paper invoices, and enter them into a text-based software system (AS400 style.) 20-30 hours a week. Just me, the Strokes (thank god for Julian Casablanca,) and two hands wounded from paper cuts (think prime rib size cuts.)

I was in the position you were in now: burnt out, feeling like a failure and sorry for myself. Except, making far less money. But, I figured out how to automate that task, taught others, saved a bunch of time, yadda yadda yadda, now I’m fulfilled and life kicks ass.

I share this because you are at the beginning of your turnaround story. You’re tired. You’ve been rejected. You’re sad. You work for a company whose name starts with a vowel (tough times, trust me, I know 😉.)

There is no better time to start kicking ass. You get to define what that means and how you change your circumstances and the world.

To start, read about some famous folks who rebounded from tough circumstances:

1. Jack Ma (disclosure: BABA shareholder)
2. Michael Jordan (missed 9,000 shots? Bro, do you even ball?)
3. Winston Churchill (Boer War)
4. St. Augustine (God provides the wind, man must raise the sail)

Realize you’re in good company.

Next, remember: you’re the IBM OP. They don’t call just anyone the ORIGINAL POSTER.

Go find out what makes you distinctive and
Get. On. A. Poster.

We’re all excited to see what the caption reads.

Love,
Dr. Kearney

You are awesome!

I was hoping to land an entry level role at a firm, work for two - three years, and then get my MBA with the option of returning to the company after. Yes, I’m in CbD and have given it every shot I can. I think it's just time to move on.

or position to begin learning new skills. Heck, I’d even intern somewhere if I had to.

If you made it to the final round - it’s only a letter of one or two more interviews and you will land well . Wish you the best and hope you land well and love the place

I was in a very similar situation where I got to the final rounds of 2 of the MBBs and didn’t make it (also former CBDer). Now I’m in industry at a great firm :) it gets better I promise! DM me if you need anything

Hi fellow cbder! I was in the same position as you (still at ibm but putting in my two weeks soon) and it just takes time. But once you hit the right opportunity, it will all be worth it. DM me if you want to chat! Good luck!

I'm currently an ops manager at a big 4 in London and received an offer from a small boutique firm with 25-30% pay rise.

I'm also in the process with Accenture but I feel like I'm not sure if I'd jump just for the money but also change in environment.
What type of things would you be asking yourself if you were in my shoes and debating to jump ship?
