International tax manager looking to move to industry in Bay Area or remote. JD background. I’ve been seeing that job postings for “managers” in industry ask for 8 years - I have 4. Is this normal? Advice on applying? Also what to expect for comp?

I definitely would still apply. That always struck me as a random number they threw out.

Bay Area first tier tech companies’ tax manager or counsel = 6- 8 yrs experience if not longer, especially for specialty tax areas.

For reference, I know someone who did 5 yrs and left for a manager at a top tech firm. JD as well. Idk if it’s common but it’s the only data point I have.

I’ve seen some of the asks as insane, which is fine if the comp is consistent with background and YOE. Unfortunately some of these places really do seem to be looking for unicorns.

Thanks everyone. Guess I’ll have to grind it out a few more years...

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
