I'm hoping to get back into accounting after being out for a couple of years. The gap on my resume suddenly looks huge, and I'm not sure where to start. Should I take courses to update my skills first or just start applying?

Start applying. Everyone has a resume gap these days. Don't give yourself any excuse to delay things further. Just start submitting applications.

Answer the biggest questions that somebody will have about that gap. Technical skills, reliability, for starters. Show how the gap was productive and how it puts you in a good place now. What is a gap that would be hard to come back from? Smaller 3-6 months is common, I’m thinking a year plus, you’ll have to work to make your case.

I’ve seen people put a little blurb on their resume to explain career gaps - if you have a specific reason for it, it might be helpful. And it’s never a bad thing to freshen up on your skills with some courses

You can probably do both?

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
