I tend to say something like this
“while I’ve enjoyed my time at EY, I feel like I am no longer being challenged and/or working on the type of projects that I would like. That being said, from speaking to abc, I know your firm has a large presence in this xyz area(s), which is why I was decided to apply to this position, as I feel it would be the best place to work and gain this experience.”
This does a couple of things. You don’t talk bad about your previous employer, you actually answer the question instead of beating around the bush like most people do in interviews, it shows you have done your research, and it shows you have interest in the position/firm you are applying to.
This is basically what I say and it’s worked for me so far.
If you’re female - “It’s not a good place to work if you’re a pancake brain”
If you’re male - “The firm doesn’t appreciate my entitlement to vacation time”
Sounds like a good way to get laughed at.

Just say that you think the new firm team is stronger and you can develop your skills better there.
Thanks for the responses 😂. I’m only leaving for money because the raises were so underwhelming at my level. I really don’t have anything bad to say about EY that I think will be different in another big 4.
That’s when you make something up about the people at the new firm/the team at the new firm being a better fit for you. The response above in this thread from EY2 is good.
You’re looking for more professional growth? Maybe something about whatever team or work you’re looking to get into at the new firm
Always the people, but looking for new challenges/opportunities in a specialty area is a good idea too.
What does the firm do better than your firm? Do you like the people at the new firm? Etc
Don’t leave EY. It’s the best out of all 4. I wished I was still there instead of D.
