I'm seeing unlimited PTO everywhere while job hunting. How do I know if it's actually unlimited? My last company said it was, but I took 3 days off and got hit with passive-aggressive Slack messages and then a random performance review. How common is that?

Unlimited PTO is a red flag HUGE red flag. They use that as a way to draw you in but even when used appropriately it’s widely known for its use to cause employees to take less time off bc the expectations remain completely unclear and it also allows pto shaming to cause guilt from the business owners and supervisors. You also don’t get any kind of pay out from not using your PTO since it’s considered “unlimited” it’s a loop hole. Don’t trust it unless you can get an insight to how the employees of the company feel about the environment around it

Punishing PTO like your last company did isn't normal at all. The bigger issue with unlimited plans is having your requests get denied, or having restrictions in place that make it impossible to take as many days as you could on a normal policy. No two companies or policies are going to be the same, so you've got to research them. See what employees are saying about PTO specifically and avoid the places where it's unlimited in name only.

I’m at an unlimited PTO company right now. The problem I see is that people think there are NO rules whatsoever around it. It does have to get approved, and there are certain times when not everyone can be off the same day or week. Other than that, it’s fine.

“Unlimited PTO” usually means “take time off at your own risk.” It’s like Schrödinger’s holiday — technically exists, but the moment you use it, you’re being “monitored for engagement.”

I have a Q that I worry is going to make me sound like a jerk, but want some opinions. I do strength training 2x/wk with a trainer who was assigned to me at a gym where I bought a pack of sessions. I don’t really consider myself “his” client bc the relationship is managed by the gym… but lately he keeps saying like “I can’t wait to see what my clients give me for Christmas” and I find it super awkward. I pay $150 per session for these workouts (cont’d in comments)…

Hello, I have accepted an offer at a competitor company and sent in my resignation letter. My start date is 5 weeks from now so I put in my end date 4 weeks from date letter was signed. The manager said I had to leave the job in 2 days and the company can only play 2 weeks of work. Is it normal how they do that?

Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I’ve been taking care of my extremely sick (literally on the verge of dying) dog. I work from home so it’s not too much of a nuisance but I feel distracted all day long and can hardly get anything done because I worry about my dog. I feel like I’d benefit from a day off or even half a day off but I’ve only been working for my firm for a month now, plus I have “discretionary time off.” Would it be okay for me to ask for a day off?

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Had a salary discussion with headhunter, who really lowballed me and told that the employer is not going to pay more than X.
The final interview is scheduled for tomorrow should I be expecting any salary negotiation during the final interview or after or is the number that I informally agreed to with a headhunter is set in stone?
How bad is it if I refuse to accept the offer? Will I be banned from working with that headhunting firm?
