I’m stressing about how to explain a gap on my resume and I don’t even know if anyone cares. It’s not a dramatic story, just life and burnout and bad timing. Still, it feels like a spotlight. Am I making it a bigger deal than it is?

You're probably not going to face a lot of scrutiny over it. In past years, it might've been a bigger deal. Right now, almost everyone looking for work has a gap on their resume, be it from leaving due to burnout or because they were laid off. Come up with your story, keep it short and to the point, and then move on to the next question. It's not as big a deal as it seems.

like

Correct not as big as a deal as back then. Definitely echo the statement about burnout. Ive seen multiple people in healthcare just quit cold turkey because they were being treated as less than human

I feel like jobs, especially in this job market, are very understanding of gaps on your resume. It is a hard job market and gaps are just getting bigger and bigger for some. Try not to stress about that as you can always explain in your interview.

like

I would just explain it as you needed some family time at home and you know life was just a little rough so I just took a bit of a break and you know, but now all that’s behind me and everything‘s good now

like

Like everyone else mentioned I think it's very important how long the gap is. But in my opinion as long as you are able to explain it you should be fine. For example life happened. Professional development. Something to say that you literally didn't do anything during the gap

like

How long of a gap?

I'd at least verbalize volunteer opportunities during that time if applicable. Surely you did something???

I think it depends on how long the gap was. You could try to spruce it up and still make it sound like you were doing something in that time!

Hi all! Is anyone here in Underwriting? Just want some thoughts on this as i’ve recently gotten an offer for an Underwriting Associate position and have never done any salary negotiations before. Does it seem unrealistic for my counter offer to be 12k more than the original offer? Considering that the original offer is roughly 8k less than the market salary. Plus i’m also accounting for wiggle room as i’m not expecting them to actually agree with the full 12k counter offer
