AA transformed me.
AA is what has worked for me coming up on 13 years, the 26th of this month. I made a good friend in the rooms of AA a qhile back, and after some time, he realized that AA wasn't going to be a long-term fit due to the fact that he attributes his sobriety moreso to having had an experience directly with God after a severe relapse rather than having worked the steps themselves. We keep in touch and connect for coffee once a month or so.
I give both experiences to illustrate that maybe AA isn't a bad place to start. We don't lock the doors, it's not a cult, and living a happy, joyous, and free life is everyone's aim. Recovery is not college football, so no rivalries to speak of, so do try any of the other groups first if you are inclined and don't for a second think that you won't be welcomed in an AA meeting. Many of us have experience with other groups to share, court-mandated programs, recovery centers, detox, etc. Others, like myself, walked into AA first and haven't succumbed to that first drink ever since.

Are you struggling with alcohol, or is it another symptom or behavior? There are lots of 12-step programs, and there are lots of options for alcohol. The “right” one is the one that works for you (though all of them require some level of surrender and looking past any denial that might be lingering).
I tried a bunch of things, but wasn’t really “ready”, and then luckily I found AA and that’s been the key for me.
I picked AA because I knew I needed help. I didn't really know about any other type of support group other than online stuff or apps and that wasn't working. I did 90 meetings in 90days as was suggested to me so I was able to try out a bunch of different meetings and find ones I liked. When they first suggested 90 meetings, my inner monologue said "yeah right lol" but I decided I could do 30/30. By the time I got that far I was starting to enjoy the program and opted to keep going. That was 2.5 years ago. I was not religious and was relieved to find it's not a religious/Christian program. It's dramatically improved my life and I find it to be alot of fun. Feel free to ask any questions.
