I’m thinking about moving from finance into tech and want sure if my current salary is a good benchmark. If a recruiter asks for my salary expectations, should I anchor based on my old pay, or only on market data for tech? Has anyone else switched industries and figured out how to negotiate without lowballing themselves?

“When switching industries, it’s better to base your salary expectations on market data for the new field rather than your old salary. Finance and tech may have very different pay ranges. Research roles you’re targeting on Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, or LinkedIn to get a realistic benchmark. Then, frame your ask around the value you bring (analytical skills, domain knowledge, transferable experience), not what you were earning before. Anchoring to your old salary can risk underpricing yourself.”

Thank you. I’ll keep this in mind!!

Finance and Tech are both high paying fields - I do recommend using tools like pay surveys (Robert Half, PayScale, etc.) to be well researched on what the industry and your target company pay.

My advice as someone who's done recruiting, is go with the higher number. If they really want you, you might be surprised at what they're willing to pay, conversely if it's 15k+ less than you're making now - is that a concession you're willing to make?

In negotiations, I always aim high (within reason). The other party will then counter which sets the stage and guardrails on the negotiations. This allows you to see how high you can go without lowballing yourself.

If they can't wiggle much on comp - Cool! Let's talk about other options like PTO, variable pay (Bonus, commission, equity, etc)., training and development costs, WFH options, parking, etc.

I appreciate your advice! I’m just afraid to scare them off with a high number or short myself with a lower number. I know many are afraid of this.

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

Should I Go Back and Reneg? Recently I was offered a role as a Project Implementation Manager (In Retirement Services) .The salary range for Colorado residents was 65-89K. I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Considering working from India for a couple of years due to personal reasons. Any advice for Salary expectations/negotiations? Haven't worked in India for over a decade.

Senior consultant, came into Deloitte with over 14 YOE (industry), in the FSI -> IM space, expertise & experience in buy side asset management.

If you are open/willing to offer referrals, happy to talk. Any insights are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
