There may not be much that can be done because it's not really an issue of shifting blame. There's probably some underlying financial problems, hence the problem with being shorthanded. Suggestions to practice mindfulness is just a cynical way of dealing with a problem by not spending a cent.
If nurses would not agree to working with that ratio, maybe they would get the hint. But I know how hard that is when you need a job!
I agree that more staff is needed. The hospital I was at in 2018 was moving from 1:7 to 1:8 on a telemetry floor which the standard is 1:4 or 5. And we had the same issues of very little basic supplies, running all over the hospital trying to find supplies, while still trying to care for our unsafe ratio. At one point we ran out of hand sanitizer and gloves, which were then put in every other room. 🥴 I left. I’m here to tell you that no amount of “better pay” was going to get me to stay and pretty much double the workload that could be done safely. The stress would still be there, it was going to be just as unsafe, even though the pay would be better. 🙄 Extra/better pay shouldn’t even be attached to an argument for proper staffing. That’s just saying to them, give me a great pay raise and I’ll care for as many patients as you want me to, I won’t complain. Nope.
Afraid not! Healthcare destroyed by COVID
That’s so dangerous!
It sounds as if you work for a company who values quantity over quality, which is very unfortunate and leads to medical mistakes. I once worked for a company like this--one year they were complaining about the number of patients seen; the next their complaint was quality of care. It usually rotated that way each year. I ended up leaving that company after the 2nd year, because I asked them in a meeting exactly what did they want--quantity or quality--and they could not answer me. Yes, after 2 years only--but I knew things were not going to change for the better and I was right--after all these years away from that company I still maintain contact with some employees and they are still complaining about this issue. There are more employers out there who feel the same way as you and those have the happier employees. Look for them, they are not usually hard to find as their staff is tenured and they rarely have job openings. Keep after them to see if there are current openings and jump in there!
I totally agree with you. No amount of meditation would make the workload be manageable. I think the only thing that can help is reminding yourself to do what you can, dont blame yourself for not doing more
