I’m working with a recruiter who is helping me find a position in a new city. While we’ve applied to posted and unposted positions, lately he’s just been sending me a list of firms and asking for permission to submit an application. When I look online, it doesn’t appear that the firm is hiring. Is this a standard practice? Is he just trying to submit to a bunch of firms so that in the future I can’t work with other recruiters if positions open up later? If relevant, I’m c/o 21 in M&A. TIA

Presumably these are firms that don't have a need and he's casting a wide net. Of course there's no reason to apply broadly to firms without a need so you can just ask him to share why he thinks there's a need or worth sending to.

Maybe try out another recruiter. It sounds like he’s just trying to make sure you don’t get a job without him.

Try to work with another recruiter

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?
