Improv can help thinking but improv is insufferable to watch
Bad improv is not fun. Good improv is glorious. I could tell you about some consistently good shows if you’re interested.
I’m looking at a class right now called Improv For Anxiety because I freeze up when I’m put on the spot at work. I’m hoping it’ll give me to tools to think quickly during both brainstorms and client presentations.
Def reco improv L1 for everyone. Not sure you specifically need one labeled “for anxiety” but regardless, do it!

Yes. And…
Took it and loved it. Both had a great time and took to heart the active listening. It’s incredible how many times in normal life someone says something and the response is not even about the thing that was said. Everyone should take it for that alone.
I took an improv class and it helped me during meetings when asked questions on the fly!
This is EXACTLY why I want to take an improv class! Glad to hear it worked for you.
Not sure it's helped my creativity persay, but I've definitely improved my conversations while in a bagel shop.

Improv is to advertising what stand-up is to copywriting. It's only cheesy when you go out of your way to tell everyone.
Yep, did wonders for me and thinking on my feet.
The skills developed definitely can help you do the work. Whether it helps the work itself is entirely up to you. :)
100%. When i was a freelancer I’d been hired cuz “we want a comedian” (i used to do standup as well) or they liked that i did groundlings. “Yes and” and “new choice” are crucial to advertising creativity. Full endorsement.
Best thing I probably ever did, both for work and for myself. Just make sure you go somewhere good. Do your research.
If you’re in NYC, the Magnet for sure
when i move to the city i plan to try it out! sounds like fun, but would help with clients. in school i did a bunch of presentations, so improv deff wouldve helped a ton with the nerves and thinking on my feet
I think it’s a perfect pairing if used properly. I was an improv person first who found advertising later and it helped both disciplines.
Lord knows every set of notes I get is yes, and
15+ years / thousands of shows
It’s actually what got me into advertising

Wow. That’s so fucked up.
I think this is kind of a chicken/egg thing. If you’re a good improviser, you’ll be a good copywriter and vice versa.
I feel like they’re different skills.
There was a whole school of great advertising that actually started with a premise and then let the actors improv on it. Some of it, particularly the work from a since retired director name of John Crawford, was brilliant. Seems to be a somewhat less used art—maybe killed by :06 madness—but I bet we rediscover its merits sooner or later (I always invite actors to improv because you never know). Long story short—learning the skill isn’t just going to work for you as a professional; you’re going to open a whole new tool kit.
Everyone should take a Level 1 class. It’s pure joy. After that, keep going if you love and don’t if you don’t.
I think it’s super helpful to open your mind to more joyous ways of thinking and of being in a room with ppl.
Happy to discuss/send recos if you like!
Do a level 1 at Magnet with Rick Andrews or Hannah Chase. Michael Lutton is also great.
I have many many colleagues who’ve taken classes at Second City and all have loved it and thought it improved their work in some way,

I think improv helps you losen up and work your creative muscle, also helps every CW I worked with to think they are comedians.
