I am lucky enough that once I am off work, I am off work. No phone calls and no emails. My employer encourages us to only work the hours that is expected of us, which is 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and no weekends.
This is great!
I work fully remote, so I am able to leave early for club Pilates. working-out is critical and unplugging for 2-3 days at a time. I take a lot of 4 day weekend (Thu and Fri or Fri and Mon).
Love this flexibility!
In all honesty, burnout is something I do feel at times. What’s helped me keep going is the support of my HR teammates, people who truly understand the weight of this work and get the gripe, and leadership that is aware of the challenges and actively trying to address systemic issues.
That said, support can only go so far if the root causes aren’t improved. For me, avoiding long-term burnout comes down to whether meaningful change is happening and that I see it happening...that I see with my eyes that what I've said to my superiors has been heard, and that it matters, and while we aren't perfect humans with a perfect business, we are trying to fix it because YOU and your voice matter. If it isn’t changing, sometimes the healthiest choice is to reset and grow somewhere new.
I also think we need to be more realistic about "work-life balance." In demanding roles like HR... there are just seasons where one area of life takes more focus than another. I don’t believe anyone can truly "do it all" or "have it all" at once...where I am succeeding in one aspect of my life, I am failing in another...and letting go of that expectation of you can have it all...the career, the kids, the sleep, the fitness/body, the social life, all perfectly in sync and thriving is just absurd and I am finally OK with that. This has helped me approach the work with more clarity and less pressure allowing me to let go more.
Lately, I'm trying to really make sure I am not overextending and am trying to stick to a hard cut off time that allows me to leave work with still some energy left to be a human and do something else in day other than just working and retreating home afterwards to recharge.
Totally agree that sometimes it’s the boundaries you set at the end of your day.
What helps me is the variety of duties. Yes, I have the usual essential responsibilities, but I have a selection of 'fun' things. It also helps that I have a boss who insist on work-life balance. A mental health walk during the day is also a great reset during a stressful time. Hang in there!
Love the mental health walk! I try to go after lunch.
I think boundaries matter most. It is easy to carry everything, but that is not sustainable. I try to separate what I can control from what I cannot, otherwise it builds up fast.
Absolutely!
