Coach
It's a little dicey for the partner because they have a fiduciary duty to the current firm not to poach other attorneys. In practice, some partners are more willing than others to have convos with their "team" prior to the departure, especially if they've been working together a long time and essentially operating as a siloed unit. Otherwise, it usually happens that they'll start reaching out to the team and try to get them over as quickly as possible after landing at the new place. Having been through this before, I have (a lot) more thoughts, and happy to share if you'd like to PM me.
Is this just equity partners or all partners?
I followed my team a few months after they left (partner and senior associate) and it honestly made the transition much easier. My previous firm understood and I had good reasons for leaving (aside from the team).
I have been through this twice, amazingly, with the same partner.
First time I moved with the partner as I was very junior and one year in. The first move was fairly acrimonious between the partner and the firm so he was placed on gardening leave one day and with his access to phone, laptop and email all blocked on the same day.
Entire team went into panic mode because the clients were wondering why the partner wasn't responding or answering calls.
HR didn't provide any updates to us either. Two days later the new firm's HR called us one by one explaining the situation and gave us a week to decide whether we wanted to move across. Our own HR still haven't explained anything to us so we resigned en masse and moved across.
Second time was about a year ago and I decided to stay for the prospects.
