In searching for new employment I can't help but worry about references. I have been at my employer for 9 years. My management has consistently stated that they 'don't give references'. They also get upset and hostile when people decide to leave the department or the company. So I know I would only be able to provide co-worker references, none from my managers. How do I handle this situation when applying for a new job?

Be honest they don't do references. The new employer may as really and you say yes. I worked for a company that was the same. Now that a few of us are no longer there we are references for each other.

I worked for a company like that, so I got a coworker as a reference. I had managers from prior companies that were willing to be a reference for me. You just explain that the company doesn't allow references.

What role are you looking for? If you’re in the field for a PE SFA role
I can refer you to my current employment

Most companies don’t give references as it is a liability. They primarily will confirm dates of employment and maybe job title.

If you’re still employed there, you can ask they not connect your current employer since they’re not aware you’ll be leaving. You’ll completely avoid a referral from the current employer this way.

References can be current or past coworkers, former bosses, and even customers and vendors you have had a working relationship can can confirm your work. Can also use colleagues from volunteer work. All can vouch for where you have worked and can give a personal recommendation. Employers can not give information other than dates worked.
