I quit my job of 20+ years, a job I loved and planned to retire from - with no other job lined up because I got tired of being given increasingly greater responsibilities and roles with the false promise every year that I would be promoted if I took on more work. They instead promoted a much younger, less-experienced and less tenured person of the opposite sex who I used to manage and whose responsibilities remained the same year over year. Discrimination at its finest.
i quit after 25+ years for some of those very reasons. i did have something else lined up first though.
it would take being financially secure. either with savings/investments or with a spouse/partner who makes enough to still make ends meet
I have never left prior to having something lined up. I even worked in a place nicknamed the sweat shop for a couple years when I was young until I found something better.

Retirement. I would have to be OK living on what Ive saved so far. As bad as it is sometimes, this is my final full time role.
